Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian ocean in East-Africa consisting of 2 islands called Unguja (known as Zanzibar) and Pemba.

The islands are part of the United republic of Tanzania and are approximately 35 km off the coast of mainland Tanzania.

The population is currently estimated about 1,3 million people.

Kiswahili is the National language. English is widely spoken. Many people speak Arabic as well.

The prevalent culture is the so called Swahili culture of the region.

About 97% of the population are Muslims.

As a visitor you should always respect the dress codes of cultural traditions. This is valid for men and women alike.

On the beaches swim wear is absolutely common but neither in the villages nor in Stone Town it is regarded as appropriate cloths.

Please do not cause offence when walking around in public with loose-fitting, short and transparent clothing!

Local customs should be respected at any time!

Zanzibaris are very friendly people known for their hospitality.

RESPECT is the key to enjoy and learn from each other and thereby reaching unknown lands ...
